A SpaceX rocket has crashed into the moon at approximately 8,700 kilometres per hour, scientists confirmed on Wednesday, after the wayward upper stage spent roughly a year drifting off course before an inevitable collision with the lunar surface.
While no observer was able to directly witness the moment of impact, a telescope based in Chile detected what astronomers have identified as a debris plume — a stream of sodium and lithium extending tens of kilometres into space — providing compelling evidence that the crash occurred as predicted. What the Telescope Revealed
The European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope, located in Chile, captured a striking post-impact signature: a plume of sodium and lithium stretching for tens of kilometres into space, persisting for up to ten minutes after the collision.
Boston University astronomer Carl Schmidt said he is "100 per cent certain" that his team's observations revealed signs of the lunar crash, despite the absence of direct imagery of the moment itself.
"We don't have images of the impact," Schmidt acknowledged, "but there is telescope evidence."
Even before the plume was confirmed, retired astrophysicist Jonathan McDowell had noted on Tuesday night that tracking observations of the dead four-tonne upper stage showed it heading directly toward the moon with no possibility of missing.
The anticipated impact site was a dusty, barren region near Einstein Crater, located on the moon's sunlit western limb — a zone near the boundary between the near and far sides that is particularly difficult to observe from Earth.
How the SpaceX Rocket Ended Up on a Collision Course
The rocket segment had originally launched a pair of lunar landers before being left adrift. According to SpaceX, a combination of solar activity and gravitational forces gradually altered its trajectory, accidentally placing it on a collision course with the moon — an outcome the company described as entirely unintentional.
SpaceX's Julianna Scheiman stated this week that the company is actively working with NASA to prevent similar incidents in the future, emphasising that the crash was not a deliberate act.
