A 37-year-old man is dead after the vehicle he was driving veered off the road and into a tree on Fisheries Road in Merivale, near Esperance on Western Australia's south coast, in the early hours of Wednesday morning. The crash occurred at approximately 6.05am, adding another fatality to what is already the state's deadliest year on the roads in more than a decade.
What Happened at the Merivale Crash Scene
The man was the sole occupant of an orange Kia Rio sedan when it left the road and collided with a tree near the intersection of Savage Road. Emergency services attended the scene, but the driver was pronounced dead on arrival. No other vehicles or individuals were involved in the incident.
Major Crash officers are now leading a formal investigation into the circumstances of the collision. Authorities are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or captured footage in the area at the time to come forward through Crime Stoppers.
WA's Road Toll Reaches Alarming Milestone
Wednesday's fatality is the latest in a string of tragedies pushing Western Australia's road toll to deeply concerning levels. The Road Safety Commission has recorded 135 road deaths across the state so far in 2026 — the highest figure at this point in the year in more than ten years.
Just days earlier, on Monday morning, two drivers — aged 45 and 60 — were killed in a head-on collision near Hamelin Pool, close to Shark Bay. The crash involved a RAM utility towing a caravan and a Toyota LandCruiser. A 12-year-old boy and a woman in her 50s were seriously injured in the same crash and remain hospitalised in a stable condition. The WA Police Commissioner indicated that Major Crash investigators are examining whether one of the vehicles had drifted into oncoming traffic.
Government Responds to Rising Death Toll
Western Australian Premier Roger Cook acknowledged the escalating crisis on Tuesday, pointing to government investment in road infrastructure and education as part of the state's response.
"We've got significant investment in new technology to make sure that we can impress upon people the importance of abiding by the road rules," the Premier said, adding that the community also needed to play its part.
Despite those assurances, the continued rise in fatalities has prompted urgent calls for more to be done. Major Crash investigators remain active across multiple incidents as authorities work to understand the causes behind WA's devastating run of road tragedies.
