A 57-year-old man has died after barricading himself inside a unit he had set alight in Bomaderry on the NSW South Coast, with police declaring a critical incident following the tragedy on Thursday afternoon.
What Happened in Bomaderry
Emergency services were called to Ritchie Street in Bomaderry at around 1.15pm on Thursday after a concern for welfare report was received. Officers arrived to find a man had barricaded himself inside a unit and started a fire within the property.
A police perimeter was established and residents in the surrounding area were urged to keep away while a police operation got underway. When officers entered the unit at approximately 3.30pm, they found the 57-year-old man inside. The fire was still burning at the time and was subsequently extinguished by Fire and Rescue NSW.
Paramedics treated the man at the scene, but he could not be revived and was pronounced dead.
Critical Incident Declared, Coroner to Investigate
Following the man's death, police established a crime scene and formally declared a critical incident. A critical incident investigation will now examine the full circumstances surrounding his death, and a report is being prepared for the coroner.
Authorities have not released further details about the man's identity or what may have led to the incident. The investigation remains ongoing.
