Indica, Sativa, and Hybrid: What's the Difference?

The cannabis plant can be divided into three different species: Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indica, and Cannabis ruderalis. Let's look at each of these types of cannabis

types of cannabis

Cannabis plants differ in species and subspecies. They not only differ in terms of appearance but also in the effects they cause. It is important to understand the difference between the strains to pick the right weed, depending on the experience you want. The cannabis plant can be divided into three different species: Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indica, and Cannabis ruderalis. Let's look at each of these types of cannabis:

1. Cannabis Sativa

This is one of the most widely recognized species and originated in Eastern Asia. Sativa plants tend to grow very tall, almost up to 15 feet. The branches point upwards and are not densely packed together. The leaves are narrow, long, and appear delicate. Many cannabis cultivators prefer sativa plants because the sparsely populated branches and height allow buds to grow well. Cannabis sativa thrives in warmer climates and is an outdoor plant.

Effects

Cannabis sativa can produce a high that is associated with creativity and focus. Medicinally, sativa plants can help manage symptoms related to ADHD, depression, stress, and other mood-related disorders. It has high levels of THC and less CBD than other strains.

2. Cannabis Indica

Cannabis indica species are said to have been originally found in the Hindu Kush Mountains. They grow up to 6 feet and appear sturdier when compared to sativa plants. The plant is densely packed and has a bushy appearance, and the leaves are broad and appear healthy. Cultivators prefer growing this plant indoors because of its size and ability to thrive in small spaces. Indica plants do not produce as much yield as the sativa variety but have high CBD levels and lower THC levels.

Effects

This plant tends to have a relaxing effect, calming the mind and body. It does not give you an elevated high; instead, it works as a sedative. Medicinally, sativa species help reduce pain, increase appetite, and manage sleep-related disorders. But it is crucial to consume it at the right time, or you may have trouble functioning throughout the day.

3. Cannabis Ruderalis

This species is not usually discussed and is often bred with other cannabis strains to mimic specific effects. Cannabis ruderalis is extremely short and has dense foliage. It's much like an extreme version of the indica plant and grows in harsh climates. It also has a very short flowering period.

Effects

Ruderalis plants produce minimal psychoactive effects. They have very low levels of CBD and THC, making them unusable in their pure form.

4. Hybrids

Different strains can be combined to create hybrids that give the user the desired effect, and cannabis cultivators make hybrid strains to control the percentage of THC or CBD. There are many popular hybrid strains well-known for their pleasant combinations of effects.

Many researchers argue that it is not easy to categorize cannabis strains or make sweeping statements about their effects. Some sativa plants could sedate you, while some indica strains could be uplifting. The impact of different strains depends on various factors, including the weed's chemical profile, your body's tolerance, dosage, and consumption method. If you are looking to buy weed online and need help selecting a strain, it's best to speak to a customer service representative. If you are new to cannabis, you can try it by buying edibles online.
