After four consecutive years of being handed off-peak fixtures at regional South Australian venues, three-time reigning AFL premiers Brisbane will finally take centre stage at Gather Round, opening the 2027 edition against Adelaide at Adelaide Oval on Thursday, April 8. The full nine-game schedule for Round 4 of the 2027 season was confirmed on Monday, with the event concluding on the Sunday night with one of the most anticipated matches of the year: Zak Butters facing his former Port Adelaide teammates in a Western Bulldogs jumper for the first time.

Brisbane's long wait for the spotlight is over

The Lions' previous Gather Round appearances were anything but glamorous, taking place at Mount Barker, Norwood Oval (twice) and Barossa Park. On each occasion they faced lower-profile opponents, meeting North Melbourne three times and the Western Bulldogs once, winning all four matches by an average margin of 38.5 points, including two victories over the Roos by more than 70 points.

AFL chief executive Andrew Dillon had all but telegraphed the change when speaking publicly in April, acknowledging that Brisbane's dominant record had earned them a more prominent platform. "The fixture is a complex beast," Dillon said at the time. "Their record would probably say that, if we're here this time next year, I think you'd see them on Adelaide Oval."

The Thursday night match-up also carries genuine stakes beyond scheduling optics. Adelaide will be looking to avenge a semi-final defeat to Brisbane in 2026, giving the opening night fixture a competitive edge to match its marquee billing.

Zak Butters' blockbuster return headlines Sunday night

The game generating the most buzz across the four-day carnival is the Sunday night closer at Adelaide Oval, when Butters lines up against Port Adelaide for the first time since his high-profile departure from the club.

Butters spent eight seasons and played 156 games for Port, serving as vice-captain and stand-in captain during his final year. He won three best and fairest awards and earned three All-Australian selections during that time, making him one of the most decorated players in the club's recent history. Yet earlier this month he officially became a Western Bulldog, signing what is understood to be the richest contract in AFL history, worth at least $17 million across nine years. The deal was completed as a restricted free agent, with a complex side arrangement understood to have played a role in convincing Port not to match the offer.

Raised near Bacchus Marsh as a lifelong Bulldogs supporter, Butters' future was the subject of constant speculation throughout the 2026 season, with Geelong also among the clubs competing for his signature before the Dogs secured the deal.

South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas, a self-described passionate Power supporter, was present for Monday's fixture announcement alongside Dillon and made no attempt to hide his anticipation. "Personally, I'm looking forward to being at a packed Adelaide Oval to see Zak Butters take on his former teammates," he said.

How Port's loyal supporter base receives Butters remains to be seen, but the AFL has clearly identified the match as a centrepiece moment, scheduling it as the final game of the round on the Oval's biggest stage.

A packed four days of football across South Australia

The 2027 Gather Round, falling across the Easter school holidays, spreads its nine games across Adelaide Oval, Norwood Oval and Barossa Park. Alongside Brisbane's Thursday opener and the Butters blockbuster on Sunday, the AFL has assembled several other compelling contests.

Friday night at Adelaide Oval features Collingwood against Sydney. Saturday offers two Adelaide Oval matches, with Carlton taking on Melbourne in the early slot, both clubs having met in an elimination final in 2026, before likely premiership contenders Fremantle and Hawthorn square off in the highly anticipated Saturday night game.

At the suburban and regional venues, Essendon face North Melbourne at Norwood Oval on Sunday morning, while Richmond and West Coast meet at Norwood Oval on Saturday afternoon. Barossa Park hosts GWS against Gold Coast on Saturday afternoon and a Geelong versus St Kilda clash on Sunday, the latter a grudge match of its own. Geelong's new recruit Rowan Marshall will face his former club St Kilda, a reunion made more pointed by reports that Marshall declined to attend the Saints' best and fairest as part of pushing through his trade to the Cats.

Dillon said the full program delivered exactly what Gather Round was designed for. "Gather Round brings all 18 clubs and their fans together in South Australia and this fixture gives supporters nine exciting match-ups to look forward to across four days," he said in a statement.

Malinauskas also highlighted a new addition to the event, confirming an inaugural Players Parade on the Friday that will give supporters the chance to see all 18 clubs' players gathered in a single location.
