A shopping centre in Craigieburn, in Melbourne's north, was briefly locked down on Thursday evening after police received reports of gunshots being fired and two groups of men were seen confronting each other with machetes.
What Happened at the Craigieburn Shopping Centre
Victoria Police were called to the scene at around 7.10pm on Thursday following reports that two shots had been fired. Upon arrival, officers found that the groups involved had already fled the area.
In a statement, police confirmed it was understood that two groups of males had been seen arguing at the location before dispersing when officers arrived. Despite the alarming reports, police said there were no injuries and no physical evidence of a shooting was found.
The shopping centre was placed into lockdown while police conducted a thorough search of the area. Images circulating on social media showed shoppers sheltering inside stores with security shutters pulled down as officers investigated the incident.
Investigation Ongoing, Public Asked to Come Forward
Police have not announced any arrests in connection with the incident. Anyone who witnessed the confrontation or has information that could assist investigators is being urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
The lockdown was lifted once police were satisfied the immediate threat had passed, though inquiries into the nature of the altercation are continuing. The incident has raised concerns about public safety at one of Melbourne's rapidly growing northern suburbs.
