Australia's oldest and largest independent brewer, Coopers Brewery, is venturing into new territory this summer, adding a traditional ginger beer on tap to its lineup for the very first time. The South Australian icon announced the new product ahead of the warmer months, describing it as a genuine brewed ginger beer rather than a soft drink alternative.
A Real Brew, Made the Coopers Way
According to Iain Cooper, the new product is no shortcut to market. "It's a real ginger beer made with real ginger juice and a malt base, hops, yeast like a classic beer," he said, positioning the drink firmly within the brewer's traditional craft philosophy.
The recipe has been formulated to stand apart from competitors already in the space, featuring less bitterness and half the sugar of comparable ginger beers currently available on tap. Cooper acknowledged it is a bold step for the brand while insisting it still fits within the Coopers family of products.
"It's a little bit out there for us but I think it still is pretty close to the family," he said. "We're very excited to share it with the country and see how it goes."
Sydney to Brew What Adelaide Cannot
One of the more surprising details surrounding the launch is where the ginger beer will actually be made. Rather than at Coopers' famous Regency Park Brewery in Adelaide, the new product will be brewed in Sydney, a decision driven by capacity constraints at the company's home base.
"During summer we start selling beer faster than we can make it," Cooper explained, noting that contract brewing arrangements are commonplace across the industry. When drinkers were put to the question at a pub, the interstate production location drew little concern.
"I've got nothing wrong with Sydney. It's Australia," one patron said. Another described it as "a good business decision."
Entering a Competitive and Shifting Market
The timing of the launch is deliberate. Coopers is entering the ginger beer space at a moment when wine and spirit consumption is on the rise, making the tap beer category increasingly competitive. The company appears to be backing the ginger beer's broad appeal to capture drinkers who might otherwise reach for something other than a traditional lager or ale.
The new brew will head to pubs in South Australia and New South Wales first, with the rollout timed to coincide with peak summer demand. Coopers is also approaching this expansion from a position of confidence, with the brewery reportedly nearing a sales record as it enters the new season.
What's Next for Coopers
The ginger beer launch represents a rare departure from the brewer's well-established identity, but one the company has been developing for some time. With capacity pressures at its Adelaide home and strong consumer appetite heading into summer, Coopers appears to be betting that a traditional, lower-sugar ginger beer on tap is exactly what the market is ready for.
