A large tree branch has crashed down onto a busy playground in Brisbane's inner-city suburb of St Lucia, seriously injuring an eight-year-old boy and a 29-year-old woman. Emergency services were called to Guyatt Park just before 6pm on Wednesday after witnesses reported the branch — which extended the full length of the playground — had struck the pair.
Branch Collapses on Busy Park During Evening Hours
The incident unfolded as families and community members gathered at the popular park. Witnesses who called triple-0 reported the tree had come down on a crowd of people in the playground area. A significant emergency response followed, with Queensland Ambulance Service confirming four crews were dispatched to the scene. Witnesses also described a large police presence alongside fire and ambulance crews attending the park.
The boy sustained head injuries in the incident, while the woman suffered injuries to her arm. The woman was transported to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital, and the boy was taken to the Queensland Children's Hospital. Despite the severity of the scene, it is understood the boy remained responsive following the accident.

Berkman later posted a statement online praising those who responded on the ground. He said his community meals team was present at the park for their regular dinner when the branch came down at approximately 5.45pm.
"Around 5.45pm a large tree branch fell in the playground area at Guyatt Park, seriously injuring one woman and a young boy. My community meals team was there at the time for our regular dinner," he wrote.
Berkman said he was moved by the response from those who were present, noting that park goers and dinner attendees acted swiftly to assist the injured pair, help move the fallen branch, and support emergency crews as they arrived.
"I hear that there was an incredible effort from everyone in the park to move the tree, get firies and ambos there, and help out wherever possible. I couldn't be prouder of our community right now," he said.
Injuries Described as Serious But No Lives Lost
In his online statement, Berkman confirmed it was his understanding that the woman was receiving treatment for traumatic injuries to her arm, while the young boy had sustained more serious injuries, including a head injury. He noted, however, that the boy was responsive.
"The young boy sustained more serious injuries, including a head injury, but thankfully is responsive," he wrote. "I am grateful that there were no lives lost in this frightening accident."
Queensland Ambulance Service did not provide further detail on the exact nature or severity of the injuries beyond confirming the hospital destinations of both patients. Medical professionals were continuing to assess both individuals following the incident.
Investigation and Community Response
It remains unclear what caused the large branch to fall, and no official assessment of the tree's condition had been publicly released at the time of reporting. Brisbane City Council has not yet commented publicly on the state of the tree or whether any maintenance inspections had been carried out at the site prior to the accident.
Guyatt Park is a well-known and frequently visited open space in St Lucia, popular with families and residents of the surrounding inner-city area. The incident has prompted concern among community members about the condition of trees in public parks across the city.
Authorities have not indicated whether the playground will be temporarily closed pending an inspection of remaining trees in the area. Both patients were in hospital care as investigations into the circumstances of the branch fall continued.
