The body of a 60-year-old East Geelong man has been recovered from waters near Avalon in Victoria, after a multi-agency search was launched when his kayak was found unmanned on Saturday afternoon.

Unoccupied Kayak Triggers Urgent Search

The alarm was raised at around 1.30pm on Saturday when the man's kayak was discovered unoccupied in Limeburners Bay at Corio, in Geelong's north. Authorities immediately launched a coordinated response, drawing in resources from Victoria Police, the Water Police, the Air Wing, Marine Search and Rescue, and SES volunteers.

The scale of the search reflected the urgency of the situation, with teams working across the bay and surrounding waterways to locate the missing man. Large-scale water searches can be complex and time-consuming, as the challenges facing search and rescue teams are often compounded by conditions on and around the water.
